We are currently seeking an Environmental & Sustainability Engineer to join our team.  Reporting to the Head of Environment and Sustainability you are responsible for providing a strategic direction and technical competence to ensure compliance with all environmental legislation and ensure the successful implementation of a company-wide EMS System.

Speciality Steel UK Ltd considers care for the environmental to be essential and this is facilitated by using a formal environmental management system which requires dedicated professional leadership capable of understanding the legal and technical requirements, both current and future, for the Business.

This role holder is expected to ensure compliance with legislation and develop and implement the company’s sustainability strategy across all sites and to provide expertise in key environmental aspects and contribute to SMART use of ESG Data including CN30 data system set up and management for LSUK.

Your responsibilities as Environment and Sustainability Engineer will include:

  • Implementing policy and strategy and ensuring adequate resource and competence is in place for the company to meet all legal obligations under the Control of Asbestos regulations at all operating locations in the UK.
  • Developing an effective policy and strategy and ensure adequate resource and competence is in place to maintain, review and operate the company Environmental Management System (EMS) and Sustainability management system (SMS) to deliver compliance with environmental legislation and company policy.
  • Ensuring effective systems and procedures exist to deliver an effective audit programme in support of the company EMS, SMS, and all legal and strategic obligations.
  • Implementing company waste management procedures to ensure legal compliance and suitability to meet company policy.
  • Ensuring that environmental competencies are defined, and all training materials are provided to enable the delivery of this across the company. Work with strategic partners across the business to ensure all required training is provided.
  • Engaging consultants and entering contracts to deliver specialist environmental services required to meet legal and strategic obligations at the best value to the business.
  • Establishing effective relationships with Government, regulatory authorities, strategic partners, and trade bodies to interpret and influence current and future legislative requirements for the business.
  • Liaising with interested parties ensuring their needs and expectations are included in the company sustainability strategy.
  • Maintaining and developing United Kingdom Emission Trading Scheme (UKETS) procedures and recording systems within the EMS.
  • Providing technical oversight and leadership for applications and variations for Environmental permits.
  • Representing the company on national and technical bodies.
  • Develop Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and related services for SSUK and LSUK.
  • Contribute to business sustainability policies, strategies, and R&D by provision of expert Environmental knowledge so Best Available Techniques (BAT) are applied.
  • Acting as technical expert for LSUK in ESG Data Collection and management, including specification of data systems.
  • Single Point of Contact for Rotherham and Scunthorpe Sites (RSB, EB and LMB) Business Units.

What we are looking for:

  • The job holder requires a minimum 2:1 degree in environmental management or a related discipline, ideally with an appropriate post graduate qualification. Must have knowledge of the business operations and key sustainability challenges posed.
  • Job holder must have a thorough working knowledge of asbestos management ideally through holding a P402 Asbestos Surveying qualification, or non-licensed work qualification, or both.
  • Be a professional or practioner member of a relevant professional body (E.g., IEMA, or CIWM full member). The jobholder should have thorough knowledge of waste management requirements.
  • The jobholder will be required to gain knowledge of our internal IT systems and be experienced in using a variety of other systems.
  • The jobholder should possess good communication skills, as they will deal with a variety of internal and external customers daily.
  • People skills are important including the ability to communicate and work at all levels.
  • The jobholder must possess the ability to act on initiative, to instigate change, and improve efficiency.

This role is a days role working Monday – Friday.  As Speciality Steels is a multi-site business, the role will be mainly based on one site with frequent visits to other sites and providing support to the whole business.
